In Progress: Highway 93 South Corridor Plan

A corridor plan for Highway 93 South (Corridor Planning Area Map) has long been a priority for the City of Whitefish. In 2007, the Whitefish City-County Growth Policy was adopted and included a Future Land Use Policy for the City to facilitate corridor plans for all major transportation corridors. Corridor plans for Highway 93 West (2015) and Wisconsin Avenue (2018) have been completed. Work on the Highway 93 South Corridor Plan began in-house in 2018. The Growth Policy recognized the complex nature of the issues plaguing the Highway 93 South Corridor and specifically called for the creation of a corridor plan that would successfully address commercial growth; scale; architectural standards; landscaping/screening; utilities; trip generation; traffic safety, circulation, access; and bike/pedestrian facilities.

Steering Committee

A Steering Committee was established to serve as the primary sounding board to work through the planning process with city staff and members of the public to establish a development policy for the Highway 93 South Corridor. The committee began meeting in May 2018. The Corridor Study Area was divided into three distinct segments for the purposes of identifying issues and opportunities, describing a vision for each segment, and setting goals to achieve that vision. At their June 7, 2021 meeting, the Steering Committee voted to move forward with a public review draft of the plan. Next Steps

July 15, 2021:  You are invited to attend a public open house from 5 - 6 pm and a work session with the Planning Board at 6 pm. Join us to learn about the Draft Highway 93 South Corridor Plan. Upon receiving feedback on the draft, staff will bring a revised draft to Planning Board for a recommendation and City Council to consider adoption of the plan.

Public Input

First Public Open House
The first public open house was held September 5, 2018. The purpose of the open house was to provide information and invite the public to help identify issues, concerns, and opportunities for improvement. Approximately 25 people joined City staff and Steering Committee members to learn about the project and provide feedback.

Second Public Meeting
The second public meeting was held January 8, 2019 at the Hampton Inn and Suites. Over 60 people turned out for the workshop style meeting. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Corridor planning process; you provided a lot of great feedback and direction.
