PRESS RELEASE:

Monday, July 17, 2017

The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, Stillwater Unit, is announcing an extension of the comment period for an upcoming project to expand the Whitefish Trail through State trust lands.  A public meeting will be held at the Whitefish City Hall on Thursday July 27 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm to discuss the project.

The City of Whitefish is proposing to purchase a public recreation use easement (similar to the Beaver Lakes Public Recreation Use Easement) on 480 acres in the proximity of Smith Lake.  Within the public recreation use easement area, 0.6 miles of existing trail currently under a Land Use License (LUL) would be permanently secured and 3.4 miles of new trail would be constructed.

The City of Whitefish is also proposing to purchase a 16-foot-wide trail easement on 8.2 miles of trails between the Whitefish Trail Swift Creek Trailhead and North Beaver Connection Trailhead in the Beaver Lakes area.

If you are interested in receiving additional details about the project, or have any comments or questions, contact Nicole Stickney, DNRC Stillwater Unit, at 406-881-2666 or nstickney@mt.gov.

Comments will be accepted through Tuesday, August 1, 2017.
